GIFTS (for Saddam Hussein) – poem

By Tolu Ogunlesi

It was the miracle of Eid-mas*
The thunderer from Tikrit, ace

of spades and face of Xerox, suddenly grew
roots through a trapdoor at dawn;

the perfect ellipsis to trail the hand
writing of crusaders on walls of marble.

These were wise men from the far
west, who,

having turned to the heavens
and seen the oil

stained star, mirthfully wrapped
gifts of ghoul, franknonsense and mire

*Hussein was executed on December 30, 2006, which was the first day of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha, and four days after Christmas.
